Varanasi flyover Accident: 19 Dead As Under Construction Flyover Collapses

In the parliamentary constituency of prime minister Narendra Modi, near the Cantonment railway station two dozens people injured and 18 killed when an under costruction flyover collapsed in Varanasi.

The FIR was lodged at the Sigra police station on Wednesday on the complaint of sub-inspector Dhananand Tripathi.

The persons who were killed in this incident many of them are labourer. Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner Sanjay Kumar said 18 bodies were pulled out.

”Four cars, an auto-risckshaw and a minibus were buried under the collapsed structure, the help came after an hour,” the eye witness said.

The opposition leader and former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav said in his tweet, ”I hoped the state government would hold a fair investigation and not cover up the incident by only compensation to victims.”

“This is the reality of development in the top-priority constituency of the country. The ministers of the state used to visit this district for regular inspections. Is this incident an accident or result of corruption? This should be told to the people of Varanasi by the state government,” the SP chief said.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) help the authorities in clearing the debris and pulling out the victim from the debris.

“Extremely saddened by the loss of lives due to the collapse of an under-construction flyover in Varanasi. I pray that the injured recover soon. Spoke to officials and asked them to ensure all possible support to those affected,” Modi tweeted.

In another tweet, the prime minister said he had spoken to Adityanath. “The UP Government is monitoring the situation very closely and is working on the ground to assist the affected,” he said.

CM Yogi government announces Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia compensation to kin of the dead and Rs 2 lakh each to the injured.

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Governor Ram Naik and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also condoled the deaths.

The FIR has listed the supervisory officials and contractors and staff appointed by them for various tasks, among the accused.

Sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) and 427 (mischief) of the Indian Penal Code have been invoked. Sections 3 and 4 of the Public Property Damage Prevention Act 1984 are also mentioned in the FIR.
