In the politically significant state of Uttar Pradesh, the Kairana constituency is almost considered to be the most strategic player in run up to 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
This Lok Sabha constituency, located approx. 630 km from capital city Lucknow has five assembly segments namely Shamli, Thana Bhawan and Kairana in Shamli district, and Gangoh and Nakur in Saharanpur district. There are about 17 lakh voters in the constituency with a large number of Muslim, Jat and Dalit voters.
After the death of BJP MP Hukum Singh, his daughter Mriganka Singh is now the party’s candidate for by-election. She is fighting with the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) Tabassam Hassan, which is supported by the Congress, Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party.
Opposition hopes that by strengthening anti-BJP votes, they will repeat the success of the Gorakhpur and Phulpur by-elections, where the ruling party had to face an unexpected defeat.
On the other hand, the ruling BJP is making extra efforts to keep the seat by sending a strong message to voters, party workers and opposition parties that the defeat in Gorakhpur and Phulpur by-elections was a fluke.
RLD party worker Abdul Hakim Khan said “he had never seen such an election in which the ruling party is being challenged by joint opposition this is the beauty of our democracy”
The state government led by Yogi Adityanath has not left an inch to campaign for this by-election. In Saharanpur and Shamli, both CM and Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya campaign extensively.
“The results of this by polls may set the tone for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections”.
