Govt orders to expand use of anti-malaria drug to curb transmission

The Union health ministry on Friday issued an advisory to expand the pool of people to be given the hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) as a prophylactic to prevent them from contracting the Covid-19 infection.

Hydroxychloroquine, sold under the brand name Plaquenil among others, is a medication used to prevent and treat malaria.

As a prophylactic drug, the medicine has shown positive results in India which is why it is advised for a larger group now.
