Most Indians Non-Vegetarian: Men More Than Women

The Modi government is promoting vegetarianism in the country according to their ideology. Recently Indian Railways on Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary implemented vegetarian menu on all trains. In the current crackdown, UP government also rounded up many illegal slaughterhouses and several meat shops. In many parts of the country there has been a lot of controversy over the issue of beef.

According to the IndiaSpend survey, about 80 percent of Indian men and 70 percent of Indian women, irregularly eat eggs, fish, chicken or meat. IndiaSpend analyzed the National Health Data.

However, whether someone is to be vegetarian or not, they will decide for themselves. A survey reveals the surprising results of eating habits of Indians. Although their regular diet includes vegetarianism such as milk, curd, pulses, beans or green leaf and green leafy vegetables.

According to the National Family Health Survey 2015-16 (NFHS-4), 42.8% Indian women and 48.9% men consumed fish, chicken or meat weekly.

Recently, a picture was tweeted by the Department of Family Welfare and Health, which had a lot of controversy. In the picture, keeping an egg-meat with junk food,  implying that both cause obesity. The image was subsequently deleted.

On one side many are opposing non-veg while, the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad Protein advises to eat foods such as milk, meats, fish, egg, and plant foods such as pulses and legumes.

According to the NIN Dietary Guidelines, animal proteins are of high quality as they provide all the essential amino acids in right proportions, while plant or vegetable proteins are not of the same quality because of their low content of some of the essential amino acids.
