It was one of the worst airline crashes in Cuba, which has been struggling to operate with a decrepit fleet of planes that it has blamed partly on the longstanding economic embargo imposed by the United States.
“There has been an unfortunate aviation accident. The news is not very promising, it seems that there is a high number of victims,” Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said after visiting the crash site.
Other family members gathered at the airport where they were rushed to a private area to await news. “My daughter is 24. My God, she’s only 24,” cried Beatriz Pantoja, whose daughter Leticia was on board the plane.
This accident takes place in Santiago the Las Vegas city near the Joes Marti airport. The reason for the accident is not known yet. According to media sources, eyewitnesses said that black smoke was visible near the airport. After the plane crashed, the fire engines reached the spot, besides the police force was also deployed.
